The body of Juliana Marins, a Brazilian national who went missing while hiking Mount Rinjani in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), was successfully recovered from a 600-meter-deep ravine on Wednesday, June 25, 2025. The evacuation marked the end of a difficult and emotional search effort after Juliana had been reported missing since Saturday morning, June 21.

Search and rescue teams located her lifeless body on Tuesday, June 24, after she was believed to have fallen into Segara Anak Lake at approximately 6:30 AM local time. She was trekking the route from Plawangan to Sembalun when the accident occurred. Her remains were brought to Post 4 on the Sembalun trail at around 5:10 PM on Wednesday.

Who Was Juliana Marins?

Juliana Marins was originally from Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A graduate of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) with a degree in advertising, Juliana worked professionally as a pole dance performer and instructor.

In February 2025, she began traveling through Asia, exploring countries such as the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand before arriving in Indonesia. Her final Instagram post (@ajulianamarins), dated June 11, 2025, showed her enjoying several tourist destinations in Bali and Lombok. The caption read, “Never fly, never try,” reflecting her adventurous spirit.

The Timeline of the Incident

Juliana started her ascent of Mount Rinjani on the morning of June 21. During the trek, she reportedly became separated from her group and slipped off a narrow and steep trail, falling toward Segara Anak Lake near the Cemara Nunggal area. Fellow hikers recalled hearing her cries for help, which proved to be a vital clue in launching an immediate rescue operation.

According to Yarman, head of Mount Rinjani National Park (TNGR), Juliana’s initial location was identified based on the sound of her voice. However, by Sunday (June 22), she was no longer found at the original spot. Rescuers believe she may have moved in search of shelter, suggesting she might have survived the initial fall.

Tragically, thermal drone footage captured on Monday (June 23) showed Juliana lying motionless about 500 meters from her original fall location. Due to challenging weather conditions, it took until Wednesday for the rescue team to safely retrieve her body from the remote, rugged terrain.

Juliana’s untimely death has sparked deep sorrow among her loved ones in Brazil and the hiking community in Indonesia. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the dangers associated with trekking extreme mountain trails and the importance of taking safety precautions.
