Central Lombok — Sade Traditional Village, one of Lombok’s most iconic cultural tourism destinations and home to the Sasak people, was hit by a devastating fire on Saturday night, August 22, 2026. The fire occurred in Rambitan Village, Pujut District, Central Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara.

Initial reports stated that the fire was first seen at around 10:00 p.m. local time and quickly spread to nearby buildings. The traditional houses in Sade, many of which are constructed using wood, bamboo, woven materials, and natural roofing, made it easier for the flames to spread.

Firefighters, local authorities, and residents were mobilized to contain the blaze. The firefighting operation continued into the night, while people in the affected area were evacuated to safer locations.

The exact number of buildings affected is still being assessed. Preliminary reports have cited different figures, including 89 traditional houses and around 30 residential homes. Authorities are expected to provide more definitive figures following the completion of the assessment.

Fortunately, preliminary reports indicated that there were no fatalities in the incident. However, the damage to homes, personal belongings, and cultural assets represents a significant loss for the Sade community.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Some reports have suggested a possible electrical short circuit, but this has not yet been officially confirmed by authorities.

For decades, Sade Village has been recognized as an important destination for visitors wishing to experience Sasak culture, traditional architecture, handicrafts, and local traditions. The fire represents more than the loss of buildings; it is also a major challenge for the preservation of Lombok’s cultural heritage.

The local community and government now face the important task of supporting affected residents while developing a recovery and restoration plan for the traditional village. Preserving Sade’s cultural identity will be essential to ensuring that the heritage of the Sasak people continues to be passed on to future generations.
