Bali is known for its rich cultural heritage, deeply rooted in mythology and folklore. One of the most famous legends is the story of Manik Angkeran, a tale that explains the origins of Besakih Temple, Bali’s holiest site. This legend carries themes of greed, karma, and redemption, making it a significant part of Balinese spiritual beliefs.
The story begins with a devout priest named Dang Hyang Siddhimantra, a wise man known for his spiritual powers. He lived a simple life, guiding people in their faith. However, his son, Manik Angkeran, was quite the opposite—he was reckless, greedy, and fond of gambling. Despite his father’s teachings, Manik Angkeran squandered wealth and constantly fell into debt.
One day, Manik Angkeran learned of his father’s secret: Dang Hyang Siddhimantra could summon the mystical Naga Besukih, a sacred dragon that guarded an immense treasure beneath Mount Agung. Driven by greed, Manik Angkeran secretly followed his father and discovered the sacred ritual to call the dragon. When his father left, he attempted the ritual himself.
When Naga Besukih appeared, Manik Angkeran begged for riches. The benevolent dragon granted his wish but warned him not to be greedy. However, Manik Angkeran, blinded by desire, struck the dragon’s tail in an attempt to steal more treasure. Enraged, Naga Besukih used his fiery breath to burn Manik Angkeran to ashes.
Upon learning of his son’s fate, Dang Hyang Siddhimantra was devastated. He returned to Naga Besukih and pleaded for his son’s life. The dragon agreed, but on one condition—Manik Angkeran had to change his ways and live a life of virtue. With his father’s guidance, Manik Angkeran was brought back to life and vowed to follow the spiritual path.
To ensure Manik Angkeran would never return to his old ways, Dang Hyang Siddhimantra used his powers to separate himself from his son. He drew a line on the ground, which later became the Bali Strait, dividing Java and Bali. Before leaving, he instructed Manik Angkeran to build a temple at the foot of Mount Agung to honor the gods. This temple later became Pura Besakih, the most sacred temple in Bali.
Today, the legend of Manik Angkeran remains an essential part of Balinese culture, teaching lessons of humility, karma, and redemption. Pura Besakih stands as a testament to this story, attracting pilgrims and visitors from around the world who seek spiritual enlightenment and blessings.
This tale continues to be passed down through generations, reinforcing the importance of virtue and respect in Balinese tradition. The story of Manik Angkeran reminds us that greed leads to destruction, but redemption is always possible for those willing to change.
