Indonesia’s path to independence was forged through countless acts of courage. One powerful chapter is immortalized at the Java-Bali Sea Crossing Monument (Tugu Penyeberangan Laut Jawa-Bali) in Gilimanuk, western Bali.

After proclaiming independence on August 17, 1945, the young Republic of Indonesia faced immediate Dutch attempts at reoccupation. In early 1946, as Dutch forces strengthened their grip on strategic islands, Indonesian fighters devised a daring plan: to reinforce Bali by crossing the narrow but treacherous Bali Strait from Banyuwangi (East Java) to western Bali.

Despite limited vessels, rough seas, and constant risk of interception by Dutch naval patrols, hundreds of soldiers and volunteers successfully made the perilous journey in small boats during March–April 1946. Their arrival bolstered resistance efforts in Bali and prevented the island from falling completely under colonial control at a critical moment. This operation became a symbol of determination, unity, and sacrifice in the national struggle.

The monument stands proudly in Gilimanuk, Jembrana Regency, just a short walk from the Gilimanuk Ferry Terminal – the main gateway between Java and Bali. Its convenient location makes it an ideal stop for anyone arriving by ferry or touring West Bali.

At the heart of the monument is a tall black granite obelisk topped by a bronze statue of an Indonesian soldier standing vigilant, rifle in hand. The figure gazes toward the Bali Strait – the very waters crossed by the heroes in 1946. The pedestal bears inscriptions in Indonesian recounting the operation, key dates, and names of participating units. Ornamental garuda motifs and relief panels further emphasize themes of bravery, patriotism, and national unity.

The dramatic natural setting – with the open strait, Java’s distant coastline visible on clear days, and frequent spectacular sunsets – deepens the site’s emotional impact.

Best Time to VisitThe dry season (April–October) offers the most comfortable weather, minimal rain, and excellent visibility across the strait. Early morning or late afternoon visits provide beautiful soft light for photos and a cooler experience.
